Who We Are
Sarasota County Commission
Incorporated in 1921, Sarasota County adopted a Home Rule Charter in 1971. It is one of only 20 charter counties in the state of Florida. The charter established a commission form of government with county commissioners as the county’s governing body. Five county commissioners are each elected for up to two four-year terms by the voters in their districts. These commissioners set policy through the adoption of resolutions and ordinances.
County Administrator and Attorney
The county commission appoints two employees. The county administrator is the chief administrative officer
and is solely responsible for managing day-to-day operations, with the exception of the Office of the County
Attorney. The county attorney represents the commission in legal matters and serves as its legal counsel.
